Denuvo, one of the latest generation of anti-piracy measures seen on PC games like Rise of the Tomb Raider, was doing pretty well for a while. While most games end up on torrent sites hours after release – if not before – Rise of the Tomb Raider came out in January of this year and still hadn’t been cracked. Until now.

TorrentFreak reported that a Bulgarian hacker called Volski had cracked the protection, though Denuvo closed the hole a bit later.

But wait!

Piracy group CONSPIR4CY released a cracked version of Rise of the Tomb Raider.

As TorrentFreak points out, even if the game has indeed been successfully cracked, it’s the only Denuvo game so far, of which there are quite a few, and it took well over six months to crack it. The rush of sales that come with a new release, then, were largely unaffected by this. Depending on how much individual work games require, the anti-piracy measure could still be effective just by keeping games off torrent sites for that much longer.

But wherever there’s security, there’s someone trying to break in, and there’s someone reinforcing doors and putting bars over windows. Denuvo will presumably fix this before too long, but in meantime it looks like the king has fallen.
