Earlier this month, China unveiled the world’s highest, longest, and most terrifying glass bridge in the world. With the world’s mental masochists apparently not satisfied, a Los Angeles skyscraper has now opened a glass slide that juts out from the 70th floor.
The US Bank Tower, one of Los Angeles’ tallest towers, now features a 13.7-meter-long (45-foot-long) slide made out of transparent glass called the “SkySlide.” The 1.2-meter-wide (4-foot-wide) slide runs from the 70th floor to the 69th floor, nearly 300 meters (1,000 feet) above downtown LA.
The new vertigo-inducing slide was introduced as part of the “OUE Skyspace” renovation that opened on June 25. Anyone can catch a ride on the slide by simply buying a ticket, which starts at $27 for kids aged five to twelve and $33 for those 13 and over.
Associated Press reporter Amanda Lee Myers described her experience on the slide as such: “I’ve jumped out of a plane from 13,000 feet. I’ve ridden 400-foot-tall roller coasters… Heights have never fazed me. Until the Skyslide.”
But if you’re understandably terrified, the slide is made with 3-centimeter-thick (1.25-inch-thick) glass. It can also withstand an 8.0 earthquake and 177 km/h (110 mph) hurricane force winds. Let’s just hope the engineer’s calculations all added up.
